Open-ocean tracking relies on satellite AIS, which has a 1-2 hour lag; coastal and port coverage is denser. Gaps appear when a vessel is in remote waters, the transponder is off, or satellite revisit times are long.

We retain full historical tracks per vessel, queryable across past months: point-by-point AIS trails, berthing records and port dwell times. The exact retention window depends on the subscription tier.

IMO is the vessel's permanent 7-digit identifier from IMO; it stays with the ship for life. MMSI is the 9-digit radio identifier and changes when the flag changes. The Call Sign is the radio callsign, tied to MMSI. Use IMO when in doubt.

Usually not. A liner's fleet is typically a mix of owned tonnage and long-term time-chartered vessels. While on charter, the carrier controls the routing and the ship runs under its service name, but ownership stays with the shipowner.

The owner holds title to the vessel. The operator (or manager) handles day-to-day commercial and technical management, often through bareboat charter or a ship-management company. The flag state is the country of registration, setting the legal and regulatory regime. All three can be separate parties.
